*❤️ To be clear: A hat doesn’t actually chan *❤️ To be clear: A hat doesn’t actually change anything and isn’t a substitute for action, giving, advocacy, marching, writing, learning, and bringing actual change. We need that desperately. But doing clothing better is another aspect of caring for people in all places in our lives and is part of the journey - thinking about supply chains and landfill waste, and forced labour is thinking about people. Which is what this is all about: everybody.
.
Our lives and norms are all too often not built to think about EVERYBODY they impact. We’re told to think about some people more than others, to value certain lives over others, to value ourselves and our needs and ease over care for others and the planet… our norm is too often to see some people as human, and others as “situations.”
.
I’ve thought so much these last few weeks about how I was an immigrant in California for a decade, 🇺🇸 🐻 I’ve thought about how through nothing they did, my kids were born to a land of supermarkets and safety rather than food insecurity and destruction...
.
So many things are complex I realise - but if we reduce humanity to a “situation” we’ll always act differently. Situations are often simpler, situations are more clinical, and maybe we can be more efficient, except humanity is worth more than efficiency and strategy. Humanity and our planet are worth undoing the ways things are done and the ways we’ve thought. They’re worth embracing complexity and cost, and sacrifice.
.

The most random gift ideas - but if you need or wa The most random gift ideas - but if you need or want something DIY, and you know someone like my dad… you’re welcome 😂
.
I haven’t done any lino cutting since I think primary school, and it took 3 tries to not write the words the wrong way, but I LOVE how they turned out! Everyone will now be getting stamp gifts. 😂
.
And the ginger bug I grew over about a week by adding a tsp sugar, a tsp of ginger and a splash of water to a jar each day until it was fizzing. Then you use that base to make sodas like ginger beer and it is SO GOOD. really easy to start and so delicious! Plus after a round of antibiotics last week I’m hoping it’s adding something back into my system. 🤪
.
If you need other gift ideas, shout and I’ll be the best gift helper I can! I love coming up with more sustainable and budget friendly ideas!
I’m over here slowly adding to the number of peo I’m over here slowly adding to the number of people walking around wearing old duvets and tote bags 😏 Clothes and fabrics in landfill are hurting so much, and then we buy more to replace them and that hurts more of our beautiful planet and its people. We’ve got to change the idea that second hand is less good, and that clothes made out of something old are less than. ❤️
.
This jacket is the #gibsoncoat by @itsallinthestitch and I ADORE it after changing it up a few weeks ago. It’s 3 different duvets and an old tote bag!
Last week my 7 year old asked if she could send he Last week my 7 year old asked if she could send her Monzo ATM card to the kids in G za. 😭 She stood with me while I was cooking trying to think of ways she could help. Listening to her sweet suggestions I threw out things like writing to our MP, talking to other people, and raising and donating money. I love bringing my kids in at their different ages to how we can take action in our world. ❤️
.
She came home from school that day and said “I asked my friends and they’re going to put coins in an envelope.” And she was determined to do more. We’ve brought them into this sorry for a long time but we’ve been tracking the Madleen boat since it set off and I wanted to suggest something that the kids could feel they had done themselves, action THEY could actually take, so I said, ‘we could spend less on food and donate the rest of our budget?’ I told them if we spend half of our usual we’d have £60 to give at the end of the week.
.
“We don’t need that much. We should just spend £20 mum, we don’t need it.” She told me. “And we shouldn’t have pastries on Saturday, we don’t need that.”
.
So we’ve cut our food budget for the week to £10/person so they can give the rest where they wanted: to kids in G za. (That’s easier said than done I know. I’m talking to a friend who knows the area very well and knows people working on the ground there.) But it’s so easy to shy away from things that feel complicated and we can easily believe someone else must know better and we should back off… but I want my kids to know that shaping our lives to feed people who are hungry - close to home or far away - will never be the wrong move, and that if in doubt on how to act, it’s always a good choice. ❤️

If you’re in Sussex or West London head to the @ukharvest bio to see where the sites are. And follow along @the.whole.home to see how we use it all this week in a kid-led budget week with the goal of donating what we don’t spend!
I’m IN LOVE with this jacket! The whole goal her I’m IN LOVE with this jacket! The whole goal here was to take what’s in circulation and turn it into things we love and wear. The first version of this diver cover jacket I was so proud of, but just didn’t love. So last week I chopped it up. ✂️ 🥳
.
And I’ve worn it more in the last week than I did in the 6 months I had it before. So, success!

I vlogged the process and talked through how I learned to sew in the last year for the sake of sustainability because it’s what people have asked every time I’ve shared a project. So I’m answering the FAQs cos I want more people to feel like it’s possible! 👏 Drop a comment “coat” (or anything, it’s not automated!) below and I’ll send you that video, and the links for this jacket pattern by @itsallinthestitch. ❤️

This is such a simple and delicious one we usually do with squash, but it’s not squash season so nice frugal @riverford carrots 🥕.

750g sliced carrots, 1 can coconut milk, 1 tbsp curry powder, 1 onion 🧅 , salt and pepper, all the water from cooking the carrots. We served with simple flatbreads and a drizzle of kefir on top. Really simple, really easy, budget friendly. 👍
We’re gonna eat kefir with everything this week We’re gonna eat kefir with everything this week 😜

The cost of food only goes up, but this is what a week’s shopping looks like this week (plus 2 baguettes we ate on the go, and some pinto beans I need to go to the bulk shop for!)
.
This week I posted a longer podcasty vid with exactly what I’d do if I needed to start food budgeting today. No clever hacks but solid advice for making it actually work! If you have want that or another one with what a week of eating this kind of food actually looks like day to day… drop a comment below! ❤️
