What we’ve spent our £500/month food budget on What we’ve spent our £500/month food budget on so far this September! 💸🍳 . Comment FOOD for a fly on the wall look at what a week of eating in our home looks and what ever weekly shop looks like on this budget. . We’re half way through the month (18/30 days) and we’re on track except I need to put some money aside for a quarterly flour delivery (usually £20/month) and I need to buy some duck food. We’re taking that from the food budget cos the goal of ducks wasn’t to spend more money. They’re covering our eggs so their food comes from the food budget! 🦆 .

We were really lucky in how little it cost us, these were the only ducks I found anywhere for £10 and I had to drive 3 hours for them. Then we managed to house/feed them from the start in things we already had (a big plastic box, a paint tray, a baking sheet, an old ice cream tub for food and a gallon vinegar jug for water.) I just had to buy a heat lamp: £20 from Facebook Marketplace. . Thrifted outfits to go to London! 👖They don’t Thrifted outfits to go to London! 👖They don’t feel that noteworthy to me years into this journey - but as long as there are so many people out there sharing Shein hauls and glorifying the norm of shopping new all the time with all its detrimental side effects… I’ll be here celebrating m second hand clothes and maybe making it a tad more normal and acceptable to make that YOUR norm! . We’re nearly 2 years into not buying new clothes and as you can see - my kids don’t lack in confidence because their clothes come from charity shops. The confidence has been an unexpected side effect of finding our own style rather than relying on other people to tell us what we should be wearing this season. And I LOVE that. . And this trip was such a treat for me. I wanted to soak up the art so much longer, but its a different pace with kids (what’s isn’t 😆.) And I loved seeing them appreciate it in their own way much more than going alone. ✏️ Are you a gallery person?!
Charity shop OOTD for an event in London. 💁🏻 Charity shop OOTD for an event in London. 💁🏻‍♀️ I found this dress at a charity shop for my brothers wedding - I stopped in once a week for 2 minutes to quickly look and after a few weeks this dress spoke to me and cost me £20 - But I want to keep wearing it after the wedding, so I’m dressing it down with Vejas and socks for an @evolvebeautyuk event in London. Another round of “what we bought for the week to Another round of “what we bought for the week to feed 5 of us on £125.” I do shop at a few different places to maximise savings and shop by our values, but I’ve got it streamlined to make it *very* quick - which is the only way it works. This came to £105 and I set £5 a week aside for a bulk flour sack every few months which is where all baked bits and bread will come from. Our meals this week are: Mac and cheese with lentil salad + greens, bean and rice bowls, hot dogs, pizza/pizza rolls, veggie nachos, pesto pasta, waffles, pancakes, granola + yogurt, egg sandwiches, and toast. Most people say duck eggs are different and only g Most people say duck eggs are different and only good for baking BUT we’ve been using them for frying too just like chicken eggs and honestly, we can’t tell a difference at all which has made me really happy!! I didn’t expect eggs this soon at all so it was a fun suprise - They were only 4.5 months old. . If you want more duck watching - I just used kids quiet time to publish a longer video too all about our experience from ducklings to ducks and what we’ve learned and why we didn’t choose chickens this time. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. Ov I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. Over the last decade our family has slowed down our consumption massively as we’ve learned it’s far reaching negative effects. Lately though, as the spotlight is so much more on all the dark sides of consumerism (as it should be) and as we’ve changed so much as a family… I’ve wondered about the JOY we’ve found in the journey of NOT buying in to consumerism. Cos it’s brought us so much joy. Not just the relief of knowing we’re limiting that negative impact, but the replacement ways of life have brought so much more good than the dopamine hit of “add to cart.” And it feels like maybe we ARE meant to want to consume, that it’s natural, except it’s been manipulated by marketing and society. Because I’ve realised I haven’t actually stopped consuming. I’ve just changed my outlet for it. Maybe the consumerism we’re sold as something that will make us happy is a cheap dopamine hit with bad side effects for us and others… when there’s a better one hidden outside of what we’re marketed? I’ve found a creativity in discovering my own style shopping what I already own and what’s in charity shops - it’s brought more real joy than any fast fashion I was told was “in.”. I’ve found joy in the ‘consuming’ of foraging and making bits of food from what we’ve found. We’ve all discovered the joy in putting together family outfits from what we can consume used, and make. I’ve found a huge joy (and a dopamine hit that easily replaces the shopping one!) in taking old fabric and creating usable garments my family loves. Then planting some flower seeds and consuming the beauty of that, and saving the seeds to gift, so much ongoing joy and satisfaction there. With no dirty hidden side effects pushed to somewhere else in the world. It seems like the consuming we’re sold - and told will make our lives better (and spoiler: doesn’t) - is a quick fix and maybe a longer lasting solution than abstinence and ‘buy less’ is found in some kind of creativity. . I’m not saying we should all plant flowers and sew our clothes, but is there a creativity we’ve lost because our world is setup with constant shopping as the norm?
Loved that I used budget to pay for food I didn’ Loved that I used budget to pay for food I didn’t buy. 😬 But here’s everything we bought for the week for our family of 5 - it’s just a few boxes of rice and jars of pasatta less than what I paid for thanks to a toddler and the self scan app. Oops. . £108 but I forgot cheese so I’m going back… call it £112. 👍 . Over the last decade our family has slowed down our consumption massively as we’ve learned it’s far reaching negative effects. Lately though, as the spotlight is so much more on all the dark sides of consumerism (as it should be) and as we’ve changed so much as a family… I’ve wondered about the JOY we’ve found in the journey of NOT buying in to consumerism. Cos it’s brought us so much joy.
